Antes del análisis del sistema fonológico inglés, debemos introducir el concepto de competencia fonológica como un componente importante de la competencia lingüística descrita en el Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las Lenguas (MCERL, 2001). En términos generales, la competencia fonológica se refiere al conocimiento y la habilidad en la percepción y producción de sonidos y rasgos prosódicos como el acento, el ritmo y la entonación.
En términos más prácticos y llevando estos conceptos al aula de primaria de FL, nuestros alumnos deberían ser capaces de comprender aspectos fonológicos básicos y producir por encima del nivel de lo que consideramos comprensible. Según Celce-Murcia y Goodwin (1996), existe un nivel umbral de pronunciación en inglés, de manera que si la pronunciación de un determinado hablante no nativo cae por debajo de este nivel, no podrá comunicarse oralmente, por muy buen control que tenga de la gramática y el vocabulario ingleses. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de la enseñanza de la pronunciación a nuestros alumnos no es hacer que suenen como hablantes nativos de inglés.
